Werder Bremen just unveiled a new corporate design system. The detail worth understanding isn't the rebrand. It's the thinking that produced it.
This one landed in the house this morning and we've been sitting with it ever since. Werder Bremen and Munich design studio Societas have spent the past year building a complete visual identity system for one of Germany's oldest football clubs. The result is worth pulling apart properly. Espresso in hand.
Start with the typeface. Bruckmeyer Neue is a bespoke serif face developed exclusively for the club, named after Günther Bruckmeyer, the commercial artist who drew the first Werder W by hand in 1924.

That W became the design origin of the diamond that sits at the centre of the club's identity today. A century later, Societas took the geometry of that original letterform and built an entire typeface around it. Every character in Bruckmeyer Neue carries the proportions and spirit of something drawn by hand before digital design existed. It will appear on shirts, scoreboards, digital platforms and every other surface the club owns. The distance between the original act and its recognition is a hundred years. That's a kind of creative thinking worth sitting with long after the first shot of the day.
The colour system tells the same story from a different angle.

Every tone in the expanded palette carries a name rooted in Bremen geography and culture. Werder Grün as the primary. Wesernebel Grau, Weser mist grey, as a cool Hanseatic point of calm. Weserlicht Grün as a signal for energy and digital applications. Legenden Gold, reserved exclusively for the moments and people who have shaped the club's history. Naming a colour system after the place it came from is a design decision that most brands never make and one that changes how the system feels to everyone who uses it. The palette stops being arbitrary and starts being specific.

The diamond stayed untouched throughout. Societas and the club made a conscious decision early in the process that the diamond was the benchmark. Its clarity and timelessness became the measure against which every other element was tested. Werder Green got sharpened. Everything else was built around what the diamond already knew about the club.
Societas have worked with Inter Milan, Venezia FC and VfB Stuttgart. What they built for Werder Bremen is a system that understands the difference between evolving an identity and replacing one.
The house thinks that distinction is worth studying regardless of whether you work in football.
Shot of the good stuff.
