Adidas at Shanghai Fashion Week was the moment the house had been watching build all year

We've been following Adidas' creative output in the Chinese market closely enough that when Shanghai Fashion Week wrapped last week and the brand shared its own documentation of the week, the house went through it properly rather than in passing.

When a brand of this scale documents its own moment this well, it tells you something about how seriously the people behind it took the brief.

The centrepiece was a full runway show during the nine-day Spring/Summer 2027 season, bringing together multiple expressions of the brand in a single space: an Adidas Originals Neo-Chinese collection drawing directly from Chinese aesthetic language, a Future of Style segment pushing the technical edge of what the Three Stripes can be and Y-3's first ever runway presentation in China.

Music was woven through the entire show as a narrative device rather than a backdrop, with performers including Veegee performing live as collections moved, blurring the line between runway and concert in a way that felt entirely deliberate. The creative team built something that could only have been made in Shanghai, and the documentation of it made that impossible to miss.

The broader programme at ROJO Art & Culture Space extended the week across multiple registers, from archive installations to a showroom housing collaborations with Song for the Mute, Simone Rocha, DIDU and GALI. The discipline required to hold that range of expression together coherently across an entire week, without any single element overwhelming the others, is considerable.

It doesn't happen without a creative team that has a clear and consistent point of view about what the brand is and what it is allowed to become.

The house has always believed that the most interesting thing a global brand can do in a local market is resist the urge to import itself and build something that could only have come from that place. Adidas has been doing that work in Shanghai for long enough that last week it showed.

The creative output are proof of exactly that.

Shot of the good stuff.
